North Atlantic Refining

The North Atlantic refinery in Come by Chance, Placentia Bay employs over 500 people to produce, refine, and market some of the cleanest fuels in the world, then ship it to customers in Newfoundland and Labrador, and around the world.

Refining is basically taking raw crude oil and processing and distilling it into various products such as gas for automobiles, jet fuel, heating oil, asphalt base, as well as many other products.

The Come By Chance refinery can store up to 3.6 million barrels of oil at a time, along with 300,000 barrels of butane. It has the largest refinery dock in North America and – similar to Whiffen Head’s Newfoundland Transhipment Limited – it uses tugboats to escort ships in and out of the bay, assist ships with docking and for firefighting support.
